‘By the community… For the community.’
The Community Larder is a provision of a 3 day supply of food items for genuine emergencies for those who find themselves in temporary hardship, with no other source of money or support. Situations such as homelessness, debt, unemployment, benefit review or family breakdown can all lead to difficulties for individuals or families. Launched in October 2008, the larder has now received over been able to support well over 6,500 people. The current economic climate has meant that the larder has become increasingly busy, often supporting around 70 people each month.
This has only been made possible through the incredible support and generosity of local churches, schools and other local organisations. The larder has been able to create a stock of items that have enabled the church to provide this valuable community resource.
During a visit by our local MP Stephen Phillips, who was very supportive he commented, "Many people do not understand what the Big Society is all about. But its projects exactly like this one which embody the community spirit which the Prime Minister and I wish to promote. I commend everyone at the New Life Community Larder for their hard work and dedication, supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our community."
